More on Stability ….in a fast moving world
A Small Contemplation
As we sit here today comfortably in our chair, we are perched on planet earth - a sphere spinning around the sun at about 18.5 miles per second or 66,600 miles per hour - the sun is spinning around the galaxy at around 135 miles per second or 486, 000 miles per hour. Yes, that is 460 THOUSAND miles per hour !! And as for the galaxy, well of course the milky way is moving too, at even faster speeds!!
It is quite a journey we are on.
Let’s not be blinded by figures , but let’s face it – that is a lot of movement!!
Yet we can walk around feeling perfectly stable, balance on one leg or place a
delicate glass on a smooth surface and it stays still ….
Now that is stability at a profound level. Doesn’t it make you too feel still and rather safe ?
Hi Christine - I was caught by the paragraph - "It also prompted me to wonder how that affects the psyche of the ... . No wonder anxiety and depression in the young is on the increase... and worse". I've been studying part-time Psychology and Child Development for almost 3 years and last week at one of the sessions we were given a handout about Mental Health in the UK and USA. It says "... A million British children - one in ten between the ages of 5 and 16 - are estimated to be mentally ill. It has been suggested that in any secondary school with 1,000 students, 50 will be severely depressed, 100 will be distressed, 10-20 will be suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder and between 5-10 girls will have an eating disorder." It goes on says, "After surveying thousands of children, they report that increasing numbers of children have mental health problems, over a quarter regularly feeling depressed, mostly as a result of family breakdown and peer pressure."
ReplyDeleteSounds rather grim. I believe its important to know and understand whats happening with our children and in order to assist them in their natural development, we need to know what they are up against ....
